Abstract:

Avartan in Khayal and Dhrupad music in Indian art music causes creativity, because it is a phenomenon that is present in all materials of music. Avartan is the cyclic not only in the temporal aspect of Khayal and Dhrupad but also the essence of svar (roughly tonal aspect) and the ordering of observation, retention, and recall in human mind.
This 'cyclicity' which is the property of avartan is the cause of creativity.
