Music School, Trinity College, Dublin

Music School, Trinity College, Dublin
New Music Tech post

This is an advance, informal notification of a post that will be
officially advertised soon. A full description will be sent to this
and other lists (papers etc.) within a month, but in the meantime let
me summarise what we're after:

* ability to teach all the main elements of a music studio, such as
sequencing, recording, sampling, etc.

* ability to supervise composition projects to do with music technology

* ability to teach popular musical styles to budding composers

The courses comprise an undergraduate component in an exisitng BA in
music of a fairly traditional nature (harmony, counterpoint, history,
analysis), a post-graduate Diploma in Music Technology of one year
leading to Master of Philosophy in a second year.

The courses are all new and the lecturer will almost be starting from
scratch without other lecturers in the Music School directly
involved (there is, however, a close link with the Dept of Electronic
and Electrical Engineering which will be overseeing some of the more
scientific and theoretical courses). Therefore much will devolve on
the new person to influence the development of courses, pursue finance
from College or sponsors, employ part-time teaching staff, oversee the
purchase and maintenance of equipment (a technician willl be on
hand!), and generally lead the College's initiative to a successful
outcome.

The post will be for either three of four years, guaranteed by
contract. If the courses are successful and the post becomes
self-financing, as is envisaged, there is a good chance the post will
become permanent and suitably upgraded, but Trinity College will not
guarantee this at this stage. Salary will somewhere be on the first 8
points of the lecturer scale, which goes up to around Ir=A319,500 p.a.

I hope the more obvious questions will be cleared up in the formal
advertisement, but if there are any reactions or queries at this
stage, please feel free to contact me. At present there are no formal
application forms, so be patient. Any feedback concering the nature
of the post, its salary level and so on, complimentary or critical,
will be greatly appreciated.

[NB: All details in this post may be subject to alteration.]
