Event Description and Information:

In 2006 the Orpheus Institute organizes the fourth INTERNATIONAL ORPHEUS ACADEMY FOR MUSIC THEORY.

Six outstanding international guest professors are invited to meet scholars, (pre-) professional music theorists, musicologists and musicians from all countries.
The aim is to work with a selected group of participants at a high level, in such a way that it will be an enriching experience for everyone involved.

The 2006 Academy focuses on MUSIC AND THEORY: THOROUGHBASS IN PRACTICE, THEORY, AND IMPROVISATION.
The multidisciplinary approach of this theme is different from other seminars and congresses, in the sense that a lively interaction between music theory, music history, performance practice, aesthetics, and related sciences is the point of departure. This explains the title “Music AND Theory,” in stead of “Music Theory.”

The following guest professors will give several lectures, participate at panel discussions, and reply to each other’s lectures:
- John Butt (University of Glasgow, Scotland)
- Thomas Christensen (University of Chicago, U.S.A)
- Robert O. Gjerdingen (Northwestern University, Evanston, U.S.A)
- Ludwig Holtmeier (Hochschüle für Musik in Freiburg, Germany)
- Rudolf Lutz (Schola Cantorium Basiliensis, Basel, Switserland)
- Giorgio Sanguinetti (University of Rome, Italy)


Rudolf Lutz is professor Improvisation at the Schola Cantorium Basiliensis in Basel, Switserland. At this school for historical (uitvoeringspraktijk) he teaches ‘Tasteninstrumente’.
In addition Rudolf Lutz teaches ‘das Fach Generalbass’ at the Music School in Basel and ‘Partiturspiel und Oratorienkunde’ at the Music School in Winterthur/Zürich. Since 1986 he leads in St. Gallen the Bach choir St. Gallen and the St. Gallen Chamber choir ensemble. At the same time he has been active during several years as an organist of the evangelical city church St. Laurenzen.

Ludwig Holtmeier is Professor of Music Theory at the ‘Hochschule für Musik’ in Freiburg. He is one of the editors of the journal Musik & Ästhetik, president of the ‘Gesellschaft für Musik und Ästhetik’ and vice-president of the ‘Deutschen Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie’. His latest publications are: “Zur Komplexität Mozarts. Analytischer Versuch über eine Sequenz” in Musik und Ästhetik (2000); Wien-Berlin. Stationen einer kulturellen Beziehung (with Mathias Hansen and Hartmut Grimm, Saarbrücken, 2000); KV 332, Versuch über Mozart; Juxtapposition und analytische Collage; Richard Wagner und seine Zeit (Laaber, 2003), Musiktheorie zwischen Historie und Systematik (Augsburg, 2004).

Giorgio Sanguinetti graduated in piano at the Milan Conservatory in 1976 and in composition at the Pesaro Conservatory in 1993. He also studied privately with Carl Schachter in New York. Since 1979 he has been active as concert pianist and since 2003 he is Associate professor for Music Theory at the University of Rome-Tor Vergata. In 2001 he was visiting professor at the Queens College and at the Graduate center of the City University of New York. He is a member of the editorial boards of GATM (Gruppo analisi e teoria musicale) and of the journal "Analitica". He is also in the board of consultants for the project Monuments of Partimenti of the Northwestern University (Robert O. Gjerdingen, Project Director).
His research fields are: History of Italian theory from 18th to 20th century, Schenkerian analysis, Opera analysis, post-tonal theory. He is co-editor (with Egidio Pozzi) of an anthology in Schenkerian analysis (forhcoming) and is currently working at a book on the art of partimento in Italy during the 18th Century.

Thomas Christensen, Professor of Music, is a theorist and historian of music theory with special interests in 18th-century intellectual history, problems in tonal theory, historiography, and aesthetics. He is the author of numerous books and articles, including Rameau and Musical Thought in the Enlightenment; most recently he has edited the Cambridge History of Western Music Theory (Cambridge, 2002). Professor Christensen served as President of the Society for Music Theory (1999-2001), and is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships. Ph.D., Yale, 1985; at Chicago since 1999.

Robert O. Gjerdingen directs the program in Music Theory & Cognition at Northwestern University. He was trained at the University of Pennsylvania under Leonard Meyer, Eugene Narmour, and Eugene Wolf. He was a former Editor of Music Perception, Executive Board Member of the Society for Music Theory and Editorial Board Member of the American Musicological Society.

John Butt specialized as a Master of Arts in Bach Music during his student years. After obtaining his doctorate in 1987, he became a professor at the University of Aberdeen and a committee member of the Magdalene College Cambridge. In 1989 he became a assistant-professor in music at the University of Berkeley. In 2001 he became a Gardiner Chair of Music of the University of Glasgow, where he is also the chief member of the music department. John Butt is especially active as a performer and conductor of several choirs in Cambridge and Berkeley. He appeared several times as an organist, harpsichordist and conductor in Great-Britain, the United States of America and Europe.

Proposal Instructions / Guidelines:

Professional music theorists, musicologists, students in music theory or musicology, musicians, and other interested persons from all countries may apply for the seminar, by supplying a biography and a motivation.

Attention! Please note that only 30 participants will be accepted.
Application is possible by means of the website of the Orpheus Institute from November 1, 2005 until February 15, 2006.

The admission fee is 100 € for students and 175 € for non-students. Lodging can be organized by the Orpheus Institute at the cost of 60 € per night for a single room in Bed & Breakfast or 100 € per person per night for hotel accommodation. Some limited basic double rooms (twin beds) are available at 35 € per person per night.
