Position: Assistant Professor of Theory and Composition

General Information:

The Department of Music in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences invites nominations and applications for the tenure track position of Assistant Professor of Theory and Composition. Georgia Southern University (http://www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgiaís premier universities. Required Qualifications:
- Completed Doctorate in Theory or Composition by August 1, 2011.
- Record of success in teaching at the collegiate level.
- Evidence of scholarly/creative/professional accomplishment.


Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated abilities in communication and maintaining an effective and collegial working environment with faculty and staff.
- Demonstrated abilities in creating and maintaining a high quality teaching and learning environment for students.
- Demonstrated success in secondary specialty area.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate will offer a model for inspired and skillful teaching, research, and creativity in both Theory and Composition. Reporting to the Department Chair, the Assistant Professor of Theory and Composition will coordinate instruction, curriculum, and course sequencing in the Theory/Composition area. Being seen as a creative thinker, he/she will maintain visibility both on and off campus. This position requires teaching, service, research responsibilities, and a terminal degree.

Duties:
Teach Music Theory and Composition.
Engage in research and creative scholarship
Serve as head of instruction, curriculum and course sequencing in theory and composition.

Screening of applications begins October 1, 2010, and continues until the position is filled. The position starting date is August 1, 2011.

Within this setting, the Department of Music offers a student-centered degree program that blends traditional and contemporary approaches. The Department of Music offers undergraduate degree programs in Music Composition, Music Education, and Performance (Instrumental and Vocal). The graduate programs include Master of Music degrees in Music Composition, Music Education, Music Technology, and Performance (Instrumental, Vocal, Conducting). Students are mentored by a faculty of 20 full-time and 18 adjunct teacher-scholars, who are nationally and internationally known in their fields of expertise. In addition, the Department is active in the University Study Abroad Program providing international academic and performance opportunities for faculty and students.
