The Department of Theatre and Music at the University of Illinois at Chicago seeks a distinguished jazz artist with strong teaching skills in the areas of theory and performance beginning August 2013. The position will be a full-time appointment as Assistant Professor, tenure track. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses in common practice and 20th century theory, ear-training, counterpoint, analytic techniques, and applied jazz performance. The individual must maintain an active professional career as a jazz performer and jazz composer and/or scholar. All faculty are expected to serve on committees and assist in student advising and recruitment.

Applicants must prove excellence in music theory, jazz performance, and jazz composition/arranging based on performances, publications, manuscripts, recordings, reviews, and awards as appropriate. They must have a significant record of excellence in teaching common practice theory, applied lessons, and performance courses at the college level. An earned doctorate degree is required. Desirable background includes: fluency in notation software, record of grant-seeking activity, record of successful student recruitment, and a record of multi-disciplinary collaboration.

The ideal candidate will help define the Departmentís initiatives in both its common practice curriculum and in its emerging jazz studies program. S/he will participate in interdisciplinary activities at the department and/or college level. S/he will be able to work with students and faculty from diverse backgrounds and participate in the Chicago arts community while maintaining a professional career.

The Department of Theatre and Music is one of four units in the College of Architecture and the Arts. It enrolls some 60 undergraduate majors in music programs and over 90 undergraduate majors in theatre. The faculty consists of performing artists and scholars. There are 13 permanent faculty and more than 30 adjunct faculty. The Department offers course work leading to a BA in Jazz Studies, Music Performance, or Theory and Literature, a BFA in Theatre Performance, and a BA in Theatre. It sponsors a weekly series of free recitals by professional performers. Student ensembles include five choirs, concert band, jazz ensembles, string orchestra, and chamber ensembles. UIC enrolls over 25,000 students on a 240-acre site one mile west of Chicagoís Loop.
