The Music Theory program, an integral part of this remarkable musical enterprise, has an equally distinguished pedigree. It is one of the few theory programs with two SMT Publication Award winners on its past and present faculty. UB's graduates receive a thorough training in the standard disciplines, but are also encouraged to explore the unconventional and unorthodox; UB alumnae have taught at Yale, Swarthmore, Temple, Ithaca, Ohio State, Wesleyan, Wilfrid Laurier, and Ottawa. The recently established Slee Institute for Tonal Harmony focuses on the porous boundary between tonal and post-tonal music, and explores ways of incorporating recent theoretical insights into the undergraduate core curriculum.
