Position: Instructor of Music Theory

Located in one of the most expansive metropolitan centers in the United States and situated in the Sonoran desert, the ASU School of Music supports a broad range of inquiry. Programs within the School of Music lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music; Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music with concentrations in music performance, jazz studies, music theatre, music education, music theory and composition, music therapy as well as two minors in music studies and music performance; Master of Arts (MA) in Music with concentrations in ethnomusicology or music history and literature; and Master of Music (MM) in composition, conducting, music education, music performance, performance pedagogy and music therapy. In addition, the school offers a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in composition, conducting and performance and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a concentration in music education or musicology. Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
• PhD degree in music theory or DMA in music composition, ABD considered
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate core theory and aural skills classes
• Demonstrated ability to teach in at least one of these four areas: 19th century/chromatic theory,20th/21st century theory, theory pedagogy, musical acoustics

Desired Qualifications:
• PhD degree in music theory or DMA in music composition earned
• Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at multiple levels, including undergraduate courses,advanced undergraduate electives, and courses for graduate students
• Demonstrated expertise and interest in music theory pedagogy strongly preferred
• Demonstrated interest in 19th century/chromatic theory and/or 20th/21st century music theory
• Expertise in utilizing current and innovative uses of technology in the classroom and in the delivery of course content
• Strong keyboard and musicianship skills

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The School of Music in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks an instructor of music theory for a one-year, full-time, benefits eligible position for the 2016-17 academic year. The position is an academic year (nine month), non-tenure track position. Anticipated start date is August 15, 2016.

The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate fundamentals of music theory, analysis, and aural skills courses, and advanced undergraduate and graduate theory courses in the instructor's area of specialization with consideration for departmental needs. Our undergraduate and graduate curricula allow for a range of teaching interests.
