Position: Tenure-track faculty position in Music Theory and Aural Skills


• Commitment to excellence in the teaching of Aural Skills and Music Theory.
• Experience with a variety of teaching methods and/or curricular perspectives.
• Capacity to teach and advise a diverse population of students.
• One or more years of full-time teaching experience (beyond the graduate assistant level) is preferred.
• Completion of the PhD in Music Theory by June 30, 2017, or equivalent professional experience.
• Evidence of ongoing scholarly productivity in the field of Aural Skills or Music Theory.
• Background in performance or composition indicating active and accomplished musicianship.
• Keyboard competence.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Music Theory and Aural Skills, beginning with the 2017–18 academic year.

The Division of Music Theory is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute through their research, teaching and service to the diversity and excellence of our academic and musical community. Review of applications will commence November 30, 2016. Those received after that date may be considered until the position is filled. Candidates may be asked to supply a link to a teaching demonstration.

• Teach courses drawn from the lower-division theory and aural skills sequence, which involves four semesters of harmony, voice leading, and analysis, assigned according to the needs of the division.
• Teach upper division courses assigned according to the needs of the division and the interests of the faculty member.
• Participate fully in departmental placement examinations and meetings as scheduled, and in responsibilities such as private readings.

Salary Range: The appointment is to be filled at a rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, founded in 1865, is the nation’s oldest continuously operating conservatory, and the only major music school in the country linked with a preeminent liberal arts college. Students are enrolled in undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Music in performance, jazz studies, composition, electronic and computer music, music history, and historical performance. Graduate programs leading to the Master of Music in conducting and historical performance are also offered. Oberlin is located 25 miles from a major airport and 40 miles from downtown Cleveland, which has a thriving and diverse music scene.
