Position: Chair of the Department of Music

General Information:

The Chair of the Department of Music provides administrative leadership for a dynamic and innovative department of 212 undergraduate and graduate (master’s degrees) students and 28 full-time faculty, along with 30 adjuncts. Undergraduates choose from among 18 degrees and concentrations, while graduates have 7 distinct degree options. The department is home to distinguished faculty and world-class performing ensembles. It is the largest department at Butler University, a selective institution with an emphasis on academic excellence. A $43,000,000 multi-staged construction project for the arts at Butler is in its final phase, while a $50,000,000-plus construction project for new dorms and a fitness center is underway. Music joins the other programs in the Jordan College of Fine Arts (Arts Administration, Dance, Media Arts, and Theatre) to form a collaborative “Community of Artists,” one comprised of 550 students, or 14% of all undergraduates at Butler, a per capita concentration of performing and visual artists nearly unparalleled among comprehensive universities in the U.S. The Chair of the music department should be an influential and engaging leader in the department, the college, across the university, and beyond.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications Required
· Earned doctorate in music
· Successful administrative experience in a collegiate music department
· Successful teaching, scholarship, professional service, and creative accomplishments in music commensurate with the rank of senior faculty member
· Evidence of superior interpersonal and group communication skills

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The Successful Candidate Will
· Articulate sweeping vision for the department, pursuant to appropriate consultation, which will further elevate programs to national and international prominence
· Promote standards of excellence in teaching/advising, research/creativity, and service
· Instill a pervasive learning environment characterized by highest expectations, ethical behavior, and generosity of spirit
· Coordinate collaborative academic and performing opportunities with other leaders in the college and across the university
· Provide leadership in fund and friend raising for the department
· Recruit and retain students
· Manage the departmental budget efficiently, exercising due fiduciary diligence
· Maintain and broaden contacts in the Indianapolis arts community, and beyond
· Support and enhance diversity in faculty, staff, and student populations
· Govern with grace, humor, wisdom, and compassion
· Model excellence in teaching

Specific Responsibilities
· Lead Faculty/Staff Hiring, Evaluation, Reappoint, Tenure and Promotion
· Lead Curricular Reviews and Revisions
· Develop and Manage Budgets
· Assign Faculty Teaching Responsibilities
· Balance Faculty Committee, Service and Advising Activities with the help of the Assistant Chair
· Prepare Financial Aid and Scholarship Recommendations
· Participate in College/University Governance
· Direct Public Relations, Publicity, Regional/National Visibility Efforts
· Manage Accreditation, Planning and Assessment
· Foster Alumni Relations and Student Recognition
· Resolve Student Concerns that Exceed the Authority of the Assistant Chair
· Represent the Department at Concert and Public Functions (share these responsibilities with the Assistant Chair)
· Teach in the Department as Assigned by the Dean
