Position: Assistant Professor in Residence of Music Theory

General Information:

The Department of Music at the University of Connecticut, Storrs campus, invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Residence of Music Theory. The start date for the position is August 23, 2017. We seek an outstanding teacher, musician, and scholar with expertise in the instruction of music theory and aural skills, who is committed to our mission of higher education in diverse musical fields in the context of a school of fine arts at a major research university.

We are pleased to continue these investments by inviting applications for a faculty position in the Department of Music within the School of Fine Arts. This position is a full-time, nine-month non-tenure track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor in Residence in the area of Music Theory. The position starts on 8/23/2017 and is renewable on an annual basis.

The Department of Music at the University of Connecticut is a fully-accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music with 20 full-time faculty members, 27 part-time faculty members, 150 undergraduate students, and 50 graduate students. The department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in performance, composition, music history, and music theory, as well as preparation for the music education program through the Neag School of Education. The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction in music theory and aural skills at the undergraduate and graduate levels and participate in mentoring students in their professional development as teachers, performers, and scholars. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through their activities the richness of diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and contribute to the development of pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
> Completed Ph.D. in music theory by the time of hire.
> Excellence in teaching at the university level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
> Demonstrated expertise in aural skills instruction, including Kodály method.
> Demonstrated record and potential in research and scholarship.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

Primary teaching responsibilities: undergraduate courses for music majors in aural skills and music theory, upper-division undergraduate courses in music theory, and graduate courses in music theory. Secondary teaching responsibilities may include general education music courses for non-majors. Advise Master’s theses, Ph.D. and D.M.A. dissertations, serve on graduate advisory committees, and supervise undergraduate senior theses. Maintain and develop a distinguished profile as pedagogue and scholar. Serve on department, school, and university committees, and perform other service as appropriate to the position.

APPOINTMENT TERMS: This is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure track renewable appointment at the Storrs campus with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2017. Faculty may be asked to teach at one of the University of Connecticut’s regional campuses as part of their assigned duties. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
