The Desautels Faculty of Music invites applications for a tenure-track probationary position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Music Theory, commencing July 1, 2018.





Qualifications:

The applicant must hold a doctorate from a recognized university, or an equivalent combination of education and teaching experience.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

We are seeking a music theorist with a dedication to teaching and research, and a demonstrated ability to foster the creative spark in others through mentoring. Equally important is the ability to develop and sustain productive and long-term musical partnerships within the Desautels Faculty of Music, the University, and the wider community, rooted in a shared vision of outstanding undergraduate and graduate programs.

The successful candidate will normally teach undergraduate and graduate music theory core and elective courses. She/He will teach within a highly respected undergraduate music theory curriculum, which uses a long established approach. The committee welcomes applicants involved in a wide spectrum of music theory research areas. Teaching expertise in a secondary area would be considered an asset.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Faculty members participate actively in the workings of the unit, including recruitment and audition of prospective students. Service on University and Faculty committees is expected, as is professional achievement and growth through continued research, publication, and/or performance. The successful candidate will join a faculty that is active locally, nationally and internationally in teaching, research/creative works.

The University of Manitoba's Desautels Faculty of Music has a growing enrollment of 230 undergraduate and 30 graduate students, and offers a Bachelor of Jazz Studies degree, a Bachelor of Music degree in performance, composition, history and general studies, a music education program, a Post-Baccalaureate diploma in performance and a M. Music program in performance, composition and conducting. There are 27 full-time faculty, and approximately 35 yearly sessional instructors.
