Robert Gauldin, Tragic Love and Musical Memory

Example 4. The use of Balakirev's suggested Db major for the pair of "Romeo and Juliet's themes" in the secondary area of that Overture Fantasy (1869), with implications of Artôt's acronym Db - A (enharmonic German sixth). This key also appears in "The Letter Scene" (Eugene Onegin 1877) with the same bVI emphasis, as well as the famous "None but the Lonely Heart" No. 6 of Op. 6 (1869), a song cycle dedicated to Artôt.
