Editor’s Message

Our fourth issue of 2004 includes articles, commentary, and book reviews from six authors:

In his Keynote Address from the 2004 SMT Annual Conference in Seattle, titled “Tragic Love and Musical Memory,” Robert Gauldin discusses how remembrances of romantic relationships are projected musically in works by Berg, Robert Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and Wagner.

In “Making Sense of Rock’s Tonal Systems,” Walter Everett outlines six different harmonic systems common in rock music, studies interaction between harmony and voice leading in sample groups of early and recent rock music, and provides detailed analysis of Beck’s “Lonesome Tears” (2003).

Yayoi Uno Everett’s “Parody with an Ironic Edge: Dramatic Works by Kurt Weill, Peter Maxwell Davies, and Louis Andriessen” draws on literary perspectives and music-theoretical applications to model the structure of satire and irony in dramatic musical works of the twentieth century.

In “More on Sharp ^4 to Natural ^4: Further thoughts on Frank Samarotto’s article ‘Sublimating Sharp ^4: An Exercise in Schenkerian Energetics,’” Eric Wen comments on Frank Samarotto’s article in the last issue of MTO. The article and subsequent commentary explore expressive qualities and inferences of energetic force in voice leadings that deny sharp ^4’s tendency to lead to ^5.

Nicola Dibben reviews Lawrence M. Zbikowski’s, Conceptualizing Music: Cognitive Structure, Theory, and Analysis (Oxford University Press, 2002).

John L. Snyder reviews The Characteristic Symphony in the Age of Haydn and Beethoven by Richard Will (Cambridge, 2002).

Also provided in the issue are listings of recently completed dissertations, job opportunities, and general announcements.
