Institution: University of Notre Dame

Position: Assistant Professor of Music Theory

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The Department of Music at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a tenure-track music theorist at the rank of assistant professor. The area of specialization is open, but the ideal candidate will be a dynamic scholar of exceptional merit developing a national/international reputation in his/her area of research, as well as a teacher who possesses the skills and dedication necessary to achieve excellence in the classroom. The Ph.D. is required and priority will be given to applicants with the doctoral degree in hand. Evidence of scholarly achievement and successful teaching experience are essential, as is a commitment to the study of music in a liberal arts context.

The successful candidate will teach a range of courses including: (1) the basic music theory curriculum for majors (harmony and voice leading, counterpoint, form and analysis, etc.), (2) advanced electives for music majors in the candidate’s areas of specialization, (3) courses for non-majors in the broader liberal arts curriculum, and (4) advanced theory seminars for students in the Graduate Program in Sacred Music. The Department is especially interested in candidates qualified to teach courses in areas outside the western classical canon, such as popular music, rock, jazz, music and technology, film music, non-western music, etc. The position will also require supervision of undergraduates writing senior theses and of graduate students in the Program of Sacred Music whose doctoral theses include a substantial amount of musical analysis, as well as service on department, college, and university committees.

The University of Notre Dame seeks to attract, develop, and retain the highest quality faculty, staff and administration.
