Position: Assistant Professor

Qualifications:

PhD, DM, or DMA in music theory or composition required at the time of appointment. Experience teaching music theory or composition is required. Evidence of scholarly activity (presentations and publications) and/or professional activities (performances or recordings) is also required. Experience teaching music technology or audio production preferred. Successful teaching experience at the university level, as well as expertise teaching counterpoint, orchestration, analysis, musicianship, or other special topics is preferred. Supervision of graduate research or background in musicianship methods (such as Kodaly, Dalcroze, or Orff), and evidence of innovative teaching practices is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate experience in teaching, mentoring, research, or community service that has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate a record of scholarly activity.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will lead and direct the areas of musicianship, composition, and music technology across the department and its curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Coursework assignments may include music theory (including aural skills); applied composition; music technology and audio production (including the development of new offerings); and specialized advanced coursework in counterpoint, orchestration, analysis, or special topics based on the candidate’s areas of expertise and departmental needs. Other coursework taught as assigned by the department chair.

The successful candidate will oversee the music computer lab and may also supervise graduate research. The candidate will also contribute to department recruiting activities and efforts. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses. In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work, and are expected to assume campus-wide committee responsibilities.

Salary Range: Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Subject to budgetary authorization.
