Position: Music Theory Teacher

General Information:

Terms of Employment:
9 ½ months with salary determined by current South Carolina teaching certificate as it relates to the teacher's salary schedule as approved by the Board of Trustees of the School District of Greenville County.

Current course descriptions:
• Advanced Placement Music Theory: 2-4 sections of AP Theory each year. The central goal of the course is to prepare students for the AP Exam and provide a music appreciation course for musicians.
• Honors Music History. Currently covers Greeks to Impressionism. Theory pre rec.
• Advanced Topics in Music Theory (Honors). AP Music Theory pre rec. Q1: Advanced four-part writing and an introduction to orchestral/band instruments and their transpositions. Q2: an introduction to the analysis of classical forms. Q3: history and analysis of literature from the 20th and 21st Centuries. Q4: an introduction to the history, style, and harmonic language of jazz.

Qualifications:

• Masters Degree or higher in Theory or Composition with proven track record of compositional activity, or terminal degree in a related field
• Extensive knowledge of Western music history and familiarity with the language of jazz
• Experience with Advanced Placement Music Theory Exam preparation or college music theory coursework
• Practicing professional musician, composer and educator
• Preferred 3 years of successful teaching experience with advanced level students
• Ability to work collaboratively with other music faculty at the Fine Arts Center
• Ability to work collaboratively with district music teachers
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Strong verbal and written skills

Job Description/Responsibilities:

• Coordinate the school’s AP Music Theory program
• Coordinate with the faculty member responsible for teaching Theory I and II
• Compose and/or arrange music for Fine Art Center ensembles
• Support performance areas: strings chamber music, jazz, voice, and woodwinds/brass/percussion.
• Composition coaching as needed
• Provide high-quality instruction to public school students during the school day in a pre-professional environment that prepares them for college and careers in music
• Co-develop and collaborate with the team of music instructors on a four year sequence of curriculum for daily instruction
• Provide music students networking opportunities, introductions to colleges, professional programs, and visiting artists
• Ability to convey and apply sophisticated musical concepts in settings with high school musicians
• School administrative responsibilities including finance requests, attendance and grade reporting
• Collaborate and provide professional development with music teachers in the district
• Partner with local, state and national arts organizations
• Possess knowledge of grade level curriculum, subject content knowledge and developmental needs of students to provide relevant learning experiences
• Plan instructionally to include appropriate curricula, instructional strategies and resources to address the needs of all students
• Promote student learning by addressing individual learning differences and using effective instructional strategies
• Systematically gather, analyze and use data to measure student progress, guide instruction and provide timely feedback
• Provide a well-managed, safe, student-centered environment that is academically challenging and respectful
• Communicate effectively with students, school personnel, families and the community
• Maintain a professional demeanor, participate in professional growth opportunities and positively contribute to the profession
• Provide work (learning experiences, student activities and formative/summative assessment) which results in acceptable, measurable, progress based results on established standards.

The purpose of our Teacher positions at Greenville County Schools is to carry out the policies of the school board as they relate to the function of the school, to the classroom, and to the immediate contact with students and parents

Teachers will be expected to furnish such after-school time as is needed for assisting students, conferring with parents, and doing other necessary out-of-school work. Reports to the building level Principal.


Fine Arts Center:
The Fine Arts Center provides a world-class arts education to high school students in Greenville County Schools. Students at the Fine Arts Center are identified as artistically gifted and experience a rigorous, pre-professional arts education taught by teaching artists in an inclusive, collaborative learning community. Graduates go on to top colleges and universities in their arts field of study and regularly receive sizeable scholarships. The faculty of the Fine Arts Center are practicing professional teaching artists who are highly skilled in their craft and are capable of effectively passing their craft to highly motivated students.

The school is organized so that students attend their home high school for core academic classes and then spend the other half of their school day receiving highly specialized instruction in their arts area at the Fine Arts Center. Students must audition to gain admittance to the program. All students studying voice, woodwind, brass, percussion and strings participate in the music theory program. The district employs two full time music theory teachers and the Fine Arts Center has a long history of students earning the highest scores possible on the AP Music Theory exam.

The Fine Arts Center has strong parent volunteer support and strong community partnerships with arts organizations in Greenville and across SC.
