Position: Assistant Professor of Music Theory

General Information:

Tarleton State University, a member of the Texas A&M System, invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track faculty position in music theory at the level of Assistant Professor. The appointment carries a full-time, nine-month contract to commence September 1, 2019.

Qualifications:

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in music theory, proven success in teaching college-level music-theory courses, and the ability to advise at the undergraduate and graduate level. Expertise required in a wide array of musical repertories and demonstrated knowledge in the fields of music theory and analysis. A secondary field is also required, such as Music Education, Music Technology, Composition, Applied Music, or Musicology.

Preferred Qualifications:

Training in music-theory pedagogy is desirable, as is a vision for implementation of cutting-edge pedagogical methods within the undergraduate theory and aural-skills curricula.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will supervise the undergraduate major-level theory and aural-skills programs, teach courses in the undergraduate theory sequence, and teach graduate seminars. Responsibilities include supervising music theory tutors, and administering placement exams. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active career in research and publication.

Responsibilities:

60% Teaching: Develop, implement and review effective teaching/learning processes, incorporating appropriate methodology, technology and other tools; Remain current in discipline and update course content when appropriate to reflect current levels of student knowledge in the discipline; Develop a system for ongoing evaluation of both teaching and learning, including expectations of student competency and student learning outcomes; Work in partnership with immediate supervisor through a formal system of evaluation of instruction to identify strengths and weaknesses and identify professional development activities to improve student learning.

10% Service: Maintain appropriate schedule of office hours for student access and inquiry; Work in partnership with student success personnel on student advising and orientation. Participate in institutional service roles such as but not limited to, college committees, club sponsorship, advisory committees, student/faculty recruitment and mentoring of new and part-time faculty.

30% Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity: Demonstrate a record of ongoing research, scholarship, or creative activity appropriate to your academic discipline.

Salary Range: Commensurate
