Position: Assistant Professor

General Information:

The Music Department in the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Music Theory at the rank of Assistant Professor, for appointment beginning in the 2020-2021 academic year.

Qualifications:

The position requires excellence in teaching and advising, professional and scholarly achievements, and service to the Music Department, the College, and the University. Applicants whose work demonstrates a commitment to inclusive excellence and diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications:
> Doctoral degree in music theory, composition or equivalent, from an accredited university, by start of appointment
> Potential for achievement as a teacher of music theory
> Demonstrated ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through teaching, research and/or service, as well as experience working in an inclusive environment
> Evidence of leadership skills to develop a high-impact music program
> Evidence of scholarly potential (conference presentations, performances, publications, commissions, grant development)


Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
> Successful experience in integrating non-classical music into theory and musicianship curricula, including Jazz and Pop idioms
> Experience in music technology, composition, music for media, and/or songwriting
> Demonstrated achievement in professional activities, record of scholarly/creative activity appropriate for earning tenure, and potential for continued creative growth

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will lead in the areas of Music Theory and Musicianship. The faculty member will teach music classes across the music theory curriculum including Diatonic and Chromatic Harmony, Advanced Theory, Form and Analysis, Counterpoint, and other courses appropriate for the successful candidate. The successful candidate will provide visionary leadership for the music theory and musicianship curriculum. Secondary expertise is also desired in areas including composition, music technology, or instrumental performance. The successful candidate will be expected to build connections with regional community colleges and to work closely with adjuncts teaching theory and musicianship to develop instructional practice that includes non-classical references and contexts.

The normal teaching load is 12 units per semester. New faculty will teach 9 units per semester for their first two academic years.

Salary Range: Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Finalists will be required to appear for interviews and to deliver a classroom presentation to students and a research presentation to the faculty.
