Institution: Ithaca College

Position: Dean of the School of Music

Job Description/Responsibilities:

Ithaca College, a private institution renowned for its undergraduate liberal arts curriculum and pre-professional and graduate programs, seeks an accomplished and visionary leader to serve as the next Dean of the School of Music. The school is dedicated to educating students who transform the human condition through the art and practice of music. The dean will be an inspiring, strategic leader and creative professional who will partner with the school’s faculty and other leaders to shape, develop, and implement a vision for enhancing the excellence and vitality of the school. The dean will nurture high-quality teaching, creative activity, and scholarship as critical components of excellence, further developing the school’s outstanding and dedicated faculty and staff. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values of the college and it is expected that the new dean will have a proven record of working with and creating equity amongst diverse groups. The dean reports directly to Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, La Jerne Terry Cornish, partners with a dynamic and energetic senior academic team, and inspires a culture of academic excellence, advocacy, and commitment to Ithaca College and its legacy.

Since its founding as a music conservatory more than a century ago, Ithaca College has trained and educated some of the country's finest musicians and music educators. Its 600 undergraduate and graduate music students from around the country benefit from a close relationship with committed, nationally recognized professors. A low student-faculty ratio and a community-engaged faculty foster strong student engagement. Students gain expertise through private instruction, focused mentoring, active pedagogical practices, service-learning opportunities, and a wide range of performance experiences, on and off campus.

Ithaca College strives to be the standard-bearer for residential comprehensive colleges, fostering intellect, creativity, and character in an active, student-centered learning community, making Ithaca a destination for work and life. Ithaca College stands apart nationally as one residential college that includes five schools – School of Music, School of Business, Roy H. Park School of Communications, School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, and School of Humanities and Sciences. Collectively, they offer more than 100 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs to 6,200 undergraduates and 460 graduate students. Faculty and staff at the college take great pride in supporting the learning environment for students — inside and outside of the classroom.

The next dean will embrace a community rich in opportunity and committed to interdisciplinary exploration. The dean is responsible for supporting and advancing the teaching, scholarship, and development of faculty and for all matters related to academic programs. The dean will be a champion and advocate for the holistic well-being of students inside and outside of the classroom; will be a visible and compelling advocate for the arts — internally and externally — with a strong capacity for fundraising; and must resonate with the school's mission. The dean will demonstrate significant intellectual curiosity, characterized by the ability to represent the work of the students, faculty, and academic programs.

In addition, the dean will provide leadership and strategic vision; work well in a collaborative decision-making environment; be passionately interested in students and their development; and demonstrate strong organizational and management skills. The dean will possess the academic credentials and a distinguished record of scholarly accomplishments or comparable achievements sufficient to qualify for tenure and appointment at the level of professor in the School of Music.
