Position: Assistant Professor of Music Theory/Cognition

General Information:

This is a full time, tenure-track position starting in Fall of 2011.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in music or psychology, and demonstrated potential for leading a strong research program in Music Theory and/or Music Cognition.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

It is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to the anticipated creation of a graduate program in Music Cognition and Music Education by offering expertise in music theory/cognition. Applicants are encouraged to provide evidence of their suitability for this goal with respect to their research and/or teaching experience.

In addition to developing and maintaining an active research profile of international stature, the candidate will be expected to teach core undergraduate music courses in music theory, and contribute to course offerings in the anticipated graduate program. The precise nature of participation in the graduate program will depend upon strengths and interests of the successful applicant. Sample contributions to this could include (1) A course surveying research on the cognitive roots of music theory, (2) a seminar on research methodology in music, or (3) a graduate seminar in music theory informed by readings in music perception/cognition. Additionally, interest and/or experience in designing a seminar on theory pedagogy (training graduate students to teach music theory) would also be highly desirable. Other teaching responsibilities will reflect the strengths of the successful candidate, and could include musicology, music education, conducting, composition, keyboard harmony, aural skills, etc.
