Position: Assistant Professor of Music Theory

General Information:

This is a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor with a starting date of fall 2015.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The Department of Music at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a music theorist or composer-theorist; this is a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor. The area of specialization is open, but the ideal candidate will be a dynamic professional of exceptional merit in the process of developing a national/international reputation in his/her area of scholarship or creative work, as well as a teacher who possesses the skills and dedication necessary to achieve excellence in the classroom. The Ph.D. or D.M.A. is required and priority will be given to applicants with the doctoral degree in hand. Evidence of scholarly or compositional achievement and successful teaching experience are essential, as is a commitment to the study of music in a liberal arts context.

The successful candidate will teach a range of courses including: (1) the basic music theory curriculum for majors (harmony and voice leading, counterpoint, form and analysis, etc.), (2) upper-level electives for music majors in the candidate’s areas of specialization, (3) courses for non-majors in the broader liberal arts curriculum, and (4) advanced theory and/or composition seminars for students in the Graduate Program in Sacred Music. The Department is especially interested in candidates qualified to teach courses in 20th- and 21st-century music, music composition including counterpoint, and in areas outside the western classical canon, such as popular music, rock, jazz, music and technology, film music, etc. The position will also require supervision of students writing senior theses in topics of music theory and graduate students in the Program of Sacred Music whose doctoral theses have analytical components, as well as service on departmental, collegiate, and university committees.
