Position: Junior Researcher

General Information:

As of 1 April 2016 or by agreement, the research group of the Bern University of the Arts (Switzerland) is offering a position as Junior researcher (50%) in the SNSF project „Creating the Neapolitan Canon. Music and music theory between Paris and Naples in the early nineteenth century“ (Swiss National Science Foundation No. 163053) at the Bern University of the Arts. There is the possibility to apply for a graduate study at Tor Vergata University in Rome in music theory under the supervision of Prof. Dr Giorgio Sanguinetti starting Spring 2016. The appointment is limited to three years.

Qualifications:

The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in music theory, music or musicology. Proven interest in the history of music and music theory is desired. A good working knowledge of Italian, French and English is required. The salary follows the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation for doctoral students. The working language is English. Job talks will take place in Bern on the 22nd and 23rd March 2016. Unfortunately we cannot refund any expenses arising in connection with an application.


Job Description/Responsibilities:

As a member of an international research team, you will contribute to the research project mainly drawing upon theoretical sources to follow the French reception of the Neapolitan partimento tradition, starting around 1800 but lasting through the whole nineteenth century. You will have the possibility of participating at international conferences and are expected to write a book (dissertation) as final result of your independent research. Selected theory sources and extracts from partimento collections will be edited and published online. This part of the project will have a direct practical impact on music teaching at the music department of BUA and will be supported by a team of music theory lecturers with research experience.

Salary Range: The salary follows the guidelines of the Swiss National Science Foundation for doctoral students.
