Position: Associate Professor/Full Professor and Assistant Professor

General Information:

The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is pleased to invite applications for two professorial positions in its Division of Composition and Theory in the Department of Music. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2017.

Qualifications:

Candidate must have a bachelor's degree and at least four years professional experience; a doctorate or the equivalent professional experience is preferred. Candidate must have a record of, or demonstrate exceptional potential for, success in teaching individual composition lessons and a wide range of academic courses.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The Department seeks two composers: one at the Associate Professor or Full Professor level (with Tenure) with an active professional career in composition, and one at the Assistant Professor level (Tenure Track) with significant activity at the early career level. Successful candidates will specialize in two or more of the following areas: concert music, electronic music and music technology, film music, jazz composition, music for dance, music theory and music theory pedagogy, opera/music theater, and song writing. and have a record of or demonstrate exceptional potential for, success in teaching individual composition lessons and a wide range of academic courses. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for intellectual leadership and expanding the scope of the School's teaching activities.

We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, research and/or community engagement has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

In addition to teaching undergraduate and graduate-level composition lessons, the candidates must be qualified to teach undergraduate freshman and sophomore music theory, graduate-level analysis courses on pre-tonal, tonal, and post-tonal music, undergraduate- and graduate-level orchestration, counterpoint, and courses relevant to the candidate’s areas of expertise. Candidates will be expected to mentor composition students, to foster additional professional-level performance opportunities for them, and in other ways contribute to the UCLA musical community.

Salary Range: Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications.
