Position: Professor of Music Research (Music Performance Research)

General Information:

The Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki is opening a post for a

PROFESSOR OF MUSIC RESEARCH

FIELD OF THE POSITION: MUSIC PERFORMANCE RESEARCH

for a full-time, fixed-term post of five years, beginning as per agreement during 2018. The post is located in the Sibelius Academy’s DocMus Doctoral School within the Faculty of Classical Music. Appointment of the post will have an emphasis on research merits.

Qualifications:

We require that as a successful candidate you have the following merits representing the field of professorship in question:

- a doctoral degree in the field of music (research)
- illustrations of high-level international research and publication activity
- insights into doctoral education in an international context
- experience in planning and organising doctoral education
- excellent teaching skills and solid experience in supervising doctoral candidates
- international working experience as well as examples of establishing an international network and successful international cooperation
- a demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary research and learning environment
- a demonstrated ability to successfully acquire funding for research.

An applicant may also be chosen for the post of Professor if he/she holds a scientific doctoral degree but does not fulfil another one of the aforementioned criteria, if he/she otherwise demonstrates excellent merits in other terms.

Desired experience:
- a proven track record of successful work in academic planning or management positions
- a proven track record in participating in interdisciplinary research projects
- personal experience of being a musician.


Job Description/Responsibilities:

As a Professor of Music Research you will conduct research and publish the results of your work, lead and develop the research activities of your field in a visionary way, be responsible for forming and maintaining research groups, plan research initiatives and work to acquire funding for research. This is how you will foster the profile and significance of research at the University of the Arts Helsinki in general and at the Sibelius Academy in particular.

As Professor, you will develop doctoral education at the Sibelius Academy and the University of the Arts Helsinki and actively participate in its implementation. For your part, you will be responsible for supervising the doctoral students assigned to you. At the Sibelius Academy there are three different pathway programmes which lead to a doctoral degree: The Arts Study Programme, Research Programme and the Applied Study Programme. All three programmes have research components, the planning, teaching and content supervision of which – in addition to other implementation – you as Professor of Music Research are responsible for, together with your closest colleagues.

You are cooperative and create connections which stand to benefit the research activities of the Sibelius Academy and the University of the Arts Helsinki. You are a central figure in establishing and maintaining strategic partnerships in Finland and abroad. Research activities and doctoral studies at the Sibelius Academy are characterised by the interaction between various areas of expertise. As a researcher and pedagogue, the fostering and development of the interplay between research, art and education is your duty, including encouraging the links between bachelor, master and doctoral level study. You will also be responsible for other applicable university tasks together with the rest of the university staff.

Salary Range: total monthly salary is approximately 5,400-6,800 € (gross before taxes), the starting salary will be negotiated when agreeing on the conditions of employment.
