Position: Instructor or Assistant Professor

General Information:

Valparaiso University seeks a candidate for a tenure-track position in music theory and composition, available beginning academic year 2018-2019.

Qualifications:

A successful record of undergraduate teaching or perceived potential for success is essential. The successful candidate will be hired at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor beginning in August 2018. The candidate should hold a Ph.D. or D.M.A. in an appropriate field (e.g., composition, music theory) for appointment as an Assistant Professor, or be ABD. Applicants will demonstrate a commitment to cultural diversity and the ability to work with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. In addition to strong academic qualifications and excellence in teaching, the University highly values experience in working across cultural and other significant differences. Candidates should be interested in working at a university engaged in issues in Christian higher education in the Lutheran tradition. Employment at Valparaiso University will require a satisfactory criminal background check.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The Department of Music at Valparaiso University seeks an energetic, collaborative, and creative colleague who possesses the following characteristics, and a commitment to maintain continued growth in these directions: leadership in crafting, administering, and delivering an undergraduate music theory curriculum; expertise in applying music technology to the teaching of music theory and composition; commitment to the teaching of undergraduates in a liberal arts setting; established or emerging profile as a composer in a variety of media; and interest in collaborating with members of a team-oriented faculty on department-level concerns, such as curriculum development and recruitment. Teaching assignments may include music theory (including aural skills), applied composition, scoring and arranging, and other areas based on the candidate’s interests and experience.
