Position: Visiting Professor (open rank)

General Information:

Valentine Visiting Professor (open rank). The Amherst College Department of Music invites applications for a full-time one-year appointment at the rank of visiting assistant, associate, or full professor that will begin on July 1, 2019. Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and nationality, among other areas. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell Grant recipients; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. or D.M.A is required by the time of appointment.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. In seeking a colleague who connects scholarship and/or creative work to innovative pedagogies in an interdisciplinary liberal arts environment, we invite applications from specialists in fields that extend or complement the areas of expertise of our current faculty. We are especially interested in applications from those who can teach courses in ethnomusicology and/or sound studies. The teaching load is two courses per semester. The successful candidate will be expected to offer introductory and advanced courses in the individual’s field(s), courses in musicianship, theory, or other subjects required for the music major, and to supervise senior honors projects.
