Position: Director (at the rank of Professor)

General Information:

The School of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts at James Madison University seeks applications for the position of Director of the School of Music. The position is a twelve-month, tenured faculty appointment which begins July 1, 2019 at the rank of Professor.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have an active national/international profile in their professional or scholarly music field, with evidence of current research and/or creative activity, as well as an earned terminal degree in that field. The Director will bring to the position an outstanding record of leadership and achievement as well as significant higher education teaching experience. Evidence of successful administrative experience in higher education should include effective communication skills and a commitment to initiatives that promote diversity, inclusion, and community engagement.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The Director of the JMU School of Music (SOM) collaborates with College leadership and faculty to realize the vision statement of the SOM—“To be an internationally recognized center of music: a community that integrates tradition and innovation, inspires creativity, and fosters lifelong curiosity.” Enthusiasm, innovation, passion for working with students, and the ability to navigate both current and future trends in music in higher education are among the most valued qualities we seek in our director. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA), the Director oversees the SOM’s resources, including but not limited to the recruitment of outstanding faculty, the budget, and the professional development of faculty and staff. The Director manages the day-to-day administration of the SOM and its curriculum. Additionally, the Director fosters academic and financial partnerships that benefit the School’s program and recruitment goals.

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
