Position: Assistant Professor

General Information:

The Department of Arts, Culture and Media at University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Music and Society. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, and will commence on July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in music or another area relevant to music and society by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental and Music and Culture program strengths. The successful candidate should also have the demonstrated ability to work within an interdisciplinary department, where horizontal connections among faculty of different fields are encouraged: see http://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/acm/acm-research-themes. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

We seek candidates with a focus on music and society, specializing in one of the following areas (listed alphabetically): applied ethnomusicology, health humanities, music and cultural theory, participatory world music ensembles (e.g., gamelan, samba, steel pan, West African drumming), and/or popular musics.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes that embody the indivisibility of theory and practice, and that serve the musical and intellectual needs and interests of UTSC’s diverse student body. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier, a teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and the teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary Range: commensurate with qualifications and experience
