Position: Associate Professor

General Information:

The Department of Arts, Culture and Media at University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Music Creativity and Technology. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, and will commence on July 1, 2019 or shortly thereafter.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree (e.g., Ph.D., D.M.A.) in an area relevant to music creativity and technology and a demonstrated exceptional record of excellence in research and teaching.

The successful candidate must have established and sustained over several years innovative and independent research at the highest international level and is expected to lead and maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence as demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, distinguished awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

We seek candidates who specialize in the research and practice of music creativity and technology with a focus on at least one of the following areas (listed alphabetically): digital and participatory culture, electro-acoustics, electronic and computer musics, innovation and entrepreneurship, multimodal creativities, popular musics, and/or sound studies.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental and Music and Culture program strengths. The successful candidate should also have the demonstrated ability to work within an interdisciplinary department, where horizontal connections among faculty of different fields are encouraged: see http://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/acm/acm-research-themes. They will be expected to teach classes that embody the indivisibility of theory and practice, and that serve the musical and intellectual needs and interests of UTSC’s diverse student body. They also will be expected to provide leadership for the department’s sound lab, participate in curriculum development, and serve on departmental and university committees in order to contribute to interdisciplinary departmental initiatives. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample course syllabi, and the teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary Range: commensurate with qualifications and experience
