Position: Assistant Professor

Full-time, tenure-track, to begin in August 2019

Job Description/Responsibilities:

The School of Music at the University of Alabama invites applications for a tenure-track position in Music Composition at the rank of Assistant Professor. A Ph.D. or DMA in music composition and college-level teaching experience are required. ABDs will be considered if the degree is completed by the start date of August 16, 2019.

The successful candidate will have:
• college-level teaching experience in music composition (including applied composition lessons, orchestration, and electronic music composition);
• professional experience in audio production (studio recording settings), audio postproduction, audio for video post-production, and media scoring (e.g., film, video, video games, multimedia, etc.);
• expert-level knowledge of Max/MSP, Pure Data, Supercollider, or other object-oriented programming platforms; and
• a background in music performance.

Applicants should be conversant with the full range of contemporary music composition and be able to teach a broad variety of courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The successful candidate also will maintain an active program of research and publication and will participate in departmental committees as needed.

The University of Alabama, founded in 1831, is the flagship campus of the three-campus system. It is located in Tuscaloosa, a city of 100,000 that was named an All-American City by the National Civic League. The School of Music is part of the College of Arts and Sciences and serves approximately 400 music majors and numerous non-majors across the university. The School offers Bachelor of Music degrees in Performance, Music Therapy, and Theory/Composition, the Bachelor of Science degree in both instrumental and vocal/choral Music Education, and the Bachelor of Arts degree in both General Music and Music Administration. Additionally, the School offers the Master of Music degree in Performance, Composition and Musicology. And it is the only institution in the state to offer the Doctor of Musical Arts degree, doing so in Performance (including Conducting) and Composition.
