Position: Assistant Professor of Music Theory

General Information:

The Conservatory of Music of the School of the Arts at Purchase College, SUNY, seeks candidates for a non-tenure-track, full-time, Assistant Professor of Music Theory. The position will begin at the beginning of the fall semester of 2019. We seek a faculty member with proven, demonstrable experience in the teaching of Music Theory at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Qualifications:

Since the Conservatory of Music offers only performance degrees, our ideal candidate will have significant background as a performer, and will approach teaching with an appreciation of the role that music theory plays in the everyday life of a working musician. He or she will also demonstrate interest in making connections not just between musical genres, but also between other artistic disciplines as well as the liberal arts.

Applicants must possess a doctorate (PhD, DMA, etc.) in an appropriate music discipline related to the position. In addition, current demonstrable experience in teaching Music Theory at all levels (undergraduate to graduate) is required. Familiarity with technology (online materials, smart classrooms, etc) is a plus.

The successful candidate will also possess good communication and organizational skills, a proven ability to teach/mentor undergraduate and graduate students, the capacity to promote and contribute to a positive teaching & learning environment, the ability to solve day to day faculty and student issues, and the capacity to ensure the smooth running of the Music Theory course sequences.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

Teaching responsibilities will include classes from the full range of the Conservatory's Theory, Solfege, Keyboard Studies and Models classes, as well as undergraduate and graduate electives. In addition, the person in this position may be responsible for scheduling and staffing, in collaboration with the COM Director, all classes referenced above. As a member of the full-time faculty, the successful candidate will be expected to ensure ongoing collegiality and the highest quality of teaching throughout the Music Theory program.

Service obligation for the position will include participation in academic advising and community service (which encompasses committee work as well as College, School, and shared governance). As noted specifically above, leadership service to the division is an essential part of the position's responsibilities.
