Position: Assistant Professor, Music Theory

Qualifications:

Required: A completed PhD in Music Theory or related field by the time of appointment. Applicants with strong musicianship and strengths in undergraduate theory core teaching are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will have research and teaching interests that both support and complement those of existing music theory faculty at the University of Michigan, as well as a commitment to nurturing a broad range of students of diverse identities and experiences, as demonstrated through pedagogy, service, and other activities. We aspire to promote a learning environment and curriculum inclusive in nature and fully representative of diversity, not only with respect to traditional markers such as race, ethnicity, social class, sexuality, religion, gender, and ability, but also diversity of thought, experience, and outlook upon the world.

Preferred: Specialization in an emerging subfield of music theory.

Job Description/Responsibilities:

Maintain an active record of research and publication. Teach a full range of courses in music theory, including core and upper-level undergraduate courses, and graduate courses appropriate to the candidate’s expertise; contribute to the development of new courses; direct graduate research through independent studies and dissertation supervision. Perform service duties to the department, school, university and the field of music theory. The appointee will also be expected to: participate in faculty governance; attend faculty meetings; serve on faculty and University committees as appropriate.
